Maryland Couple Celebrates 70 Years of Marriage

A Frederick, Md., couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this week.

Ray and Louise Horst marked their anniversary at their retirement community Wednesday, the Frederick News-Post reported.

Staff members and residents of the community, Country Meadows of Frederick, greeted the couple with a surprise party, cake and a champagne toast.

“My parents are amazing people,” their son, Rodger Horst, told the News-Post. “They showed my sister and I how to live a good life and how to get through troubles.”

The Horsts met and fell in love while working together at a St. Louis plant that made ammunition for World War II. After Ray Horst was drafted, he was sent to California and Louise followed him there.

They married on June 19, 1943 at a chapel in Riverside, Calif.

“They’ve both made the whole world a different place,” said their daughter, Patricia Cole. “If we had to have picked, we wouldn’t have picked anybody else.”

Ray Horst, now 90, said of his anniversary, "We work on it, but I don't think we will make it another 70."

The Horsts have two children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, the News-Post reported.
