Maryland Commission Recommends Death Penalty Ban

Formal report issued Friday

The Maryland Commission on Capital Punishment formally recommended the state ban the death penalty Friday, the Washington Times reported.

Among the reasons for the decision were racial and regional disparities, the cost of prosecuting capital cases, and the lack of evidence that the death penalty is a deterrent.

The panel's report also noted that capital prosecutions can be harder on victims' families than life sentences because of the lengthy appeals process.
