Maryland Applies Twice for High-Speed Rail Funding

The state of Maryland has submitted two applications for federal high-speed rail funding.

Gov. Martin O'Malley announced Tuesday that the state has formally sent two applications for funding under the Federal Railroad Administration's High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail program.

The O'Malley administration is applying for additional funding after $2.4 billion became available when Florida Gov. Rick Scott rejected $2.4 billion in federal money to build a high speed rail between Tampa and Orlando.

O'Malley is requesting $299 million for improvements to the Amtrack/MARC rail station at BWI Thurgood Marshal Airport. The O'Malley administration also is requesting $116 million to advance studies to replace and add capacity to three bridges in northeast Maryland across the Bush, Gunpowder and Susquehanna rivers.
