A Marine suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday while guarding the home of the Marine Corps' highest-ranking officer.
Just before 8 a.m., the Marine was outside a guard station near the Home of the Commandants on G Street SE in D.C. when he discharged his weapon, injuring himself.
"As soon as that happened, D.C. metro police as well as fire and emergency services from the Navy Yard and, of course, our local Marines here at the Barracks responded," Gunnery Sgt. John Jackson said.
The Marine was taken to George Washington University Hospital, where he remains in fair but stable condition, officials said.
A team of Naval criminal investigators combed the area, trying to piece together what happened.
The shooting happened in one of the most historic parts of Capitol Hill just half a block away from Barracks Row.
Investigators said they did not know if the shooting was an accident or intentional.
