A 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty last month to assaulting a senior citizen on an escalator in the Eastern Market Metro station now is accused of punching a Metro Transit Police officer.

A plainclothes officer was assisting another officer with an arrest on the 700 block of 7th Street NW about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when Elijah Smith approached and said, "You will not disrespect me before my God," and then tried to talk to the arrestee, according to police.

The plainclothes officer asked Smith to move along, prompting Smith to threaten, "Next time I see you, I'm going to break your f------ face," before he began to walk away, according to the police report.

The plainclothes officer grabbed Smith by the back of his jacket, but Smith pulled his arms through and struck the officer in the face several times, knocking him to the ground, according to the report.

"The officer started to place him under arrest, and Mr. Smith subsequently punched him four or five times after a brief scuffle," Metro Transit Deputy Police Chief Kevin Gaddis said.

The other officer knocked Smith to the ground, and he continued to fight with the plainclothes officer, according to the report.

The officers punched Smith in the face and stomach, but he continued to resist, refusing to obey orders to put his hands behind his back, police said. They were able to get his hands behind his back and cuff him after using pepper spray.

Once in custody, Smith said he had taken five pills and had been drinking, according to the report.

D.C. Fire and EMS treated the plainclothes officer and Smith at the scene.

Smith was charged with assaulting a police officer.

In April, Smith got into an argument with a 69-year-old man and shoved him as they got off an Orange Line train at the Eastern Market station. They continued to exchange words, and Smith spit in the man's face and punched him in the face three times, knocking him down, the man said.

Smith pleaded guilty to assault with significant injury. He is scheduled for sentencing in that crime on Thursday.

In May 2014, Smith put a Silver Spring, Maryland, actor in the hospital after attacking and robbing him, police said.
