Man Who Borrowed DC Councilman's Car Charged in Hit-and-Run

A man who police say struck another vehicle while driving a D.C. councilman's car before driving off is now facing charges.

According to court documents, 28-year-old Sergio Raynard Hill, of Southeast D.C., was charged with leaving the scene of a collision and driving without a license.

D.C. police said Hill was behind the wheel of Councilman Trayon White's BMW when he struck a Toyota Camry along I-295 near Malcolm X Avenue on March 18.

No one was hurt in the crash.

According to an affadavit, the woman driving the Camry told police Hill initially stopped and identified himself as "Sergio Vererta" and gave her two phone numbers. He then took off without giving her any additional identifying information.

A police officer who tried to call the phone numbers found that both numbers were invalid, the affidavit said.

Police then contacted White after finding the license plate information the woman provided matched the plate registered to him.

White told police that Hill, a friend of his, admitted to borrowing the car without his consent and told him that he was involved in a minor fender bender, the Washington Post reports.

Hill admitted to driving White's car and told police he left the scene "because he panicked," the affadavit said.

According to the Post, White has disputed the police description of the crash as a hit-and-run. He has said Hill told him he “was able to resolve the accident at the scene with the other driver.”

Hill was ordered to appear in D.C. Superior Court on May 1.
