Man Walking to Add Value to SmarTrip Card Struck and Killed in Maryland

A man was walking to a location to add value to his Metro SmarTrip pass when he was struck and killed in Wheaton, Maryland, Sunday night, his brother said.

Juan Gonzalez Cardenas said police went to his Silver Spring home late Sunday night to tell him his brother, 51-year-old Omar Rivas Cardenas, was dead.

Juan Gonzalez Cardenas said police told him his brother, a father of two grown sons, was run over on Huggins Drive by someone who drove away, Telemundo 44’s Alberto Pimienta reported.

He was taken to a hospital where he died.

The victim usually refilled the card closer to his Silver Spring home, but that location was closed, his brother said.

Omar Rivas Cardenas worked in maintenance in Virginia and was a devout man who lived a clean life and enjoyed singing in church choirs, his brother said.

Montgomery County Police set up electronic signboards near the scene of the incident asking anyone with information to contact them at 240-773-5700.

Omar Rivas Cardenas once expressed the desire to be buried next to his mother in his native Honduras. His family started a GoFundMe account to try to do that.
