Man Suspected of Threatening Government Official in Custody; Bomb Squad Searched His DC Home

A man suspected of threatening a government official stabbed himself during a standoff with authorities in Northeast D.C. Friday, and a bomb squad checked his apartment for explosives, a law enforcement source said.

The U.S. Secret Service confirmed a caller requested a welfare check at an apartment in the 100 block of K Street NE Friday morning.

The man did not grant Secret Service agents and D.C. police officers access to the apartment, the Secret Service said.

Authorities learned Friday afternoon the man could be a danger to himself and entered the apartment, the Secret Service said. They found him with a knife wound and took him to the hospital.

At the hospital, the man said he had explosives in his home, and the bomb squad was called, a law enforcement source said. No explosives were found.

Police closed several streets around the apartment building during the investigation. The scene was cleared about 5:30 p.m.
