Man Killed in Crash With Tractor-Trailer on Beltway

Victim's car stopped on I-495 and was rear-ended by two other vehicles.

A Princes George's County man died Wednesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on the Beltway.

Kwame Abban, 44, was driving on I-495 near New Hampshire Avenue around 5:15 a.m. when his Toyota Corolla stopped in the roadway and his car was rear-ended by Nissan sedan. The driver of the Nissan moved her car to the shoulder, but then Abban's Corolla was struck by a tractor-trailer.

The impact spun the victim's car around, causing it to come to a stop facing the opposite direction. He was transported to Suburban Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say they believe all drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

It is unknown why Abban's car initially stopped on the roadway, and why Abban, of Lanham, remained with the car after the first impact.

The westbound lanes of I-495 were closed for about five hours following the crash. Authorities are continuing to investigate.
