Man Indicted in 30-Year-Old Cold Case

A 69-year-old man has been indicted over 30 years after prosecutors say he murdered a woman in Laurel, Maryland.

John Walsh was already in prison for a parole violation when he was charged with first degree murder, kidnapping and false imprisonment in connection with the death of Stephanie Watson.

Watson left her home for work on July 22, 1982 and was never seen again. Her car was found a few days later, covered in blood. In September 1982, a witness saw a man throw a plastic bag into the woods. When he went to investigate, he found a skull that was later identified as being Watson. The rest of her remains were never found.

According to the Office of the State's Attorney, Walsh had been convicted of rape in 1969 but released on parole in 1980. Police believe he murder Watson while out on parole. He was jailed again in 1989 when he violated his probation.

Last year, a Prince George's County police detective submitted blood samples from Watson's car into a database for all inmates and got a match for Walsh.
