Deangelo Gatling, 18, Fatally Shot in Southeast D.C.

Police say an 18-year-old man was gunned down in Southeast D.C., just blocks from District 7 Police Headquarters.

Crews found Deangelo Gatling suffering from gunshot wounds around 2 p.m. Sunday. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officials tell News4 Gatling was chased down the street by a masked gunman and had taken cover at a friend's home on 24th Street SE when he was shot and killed.

Michael Butler, a neighbor, said he heard the gunshots while he was on his way home from church.

"[I heard] maybe about 5 or 6 shots," Butler said.

Gatling's family told News4's Pat Collins he was studying to become an engineer and would rap in his spare time.

"This has made us numb," Gatling's cousin Rickia Hill said. "We're shocked and in disbelief."

Gatling was robbed approximately 3 weeks ago outside his home.

Police have not released suspect or motive information.
