Man Dies Following Stun-Gun Scuffle With Culpeper Police Officers

State police are investigating the death of man after several Culpeper police officers used stun guns during a scuffle with him.

Dominick R. Wise, 30, died hours after the Sunday night incident.

Authorities say that an officer saw Wise walking in circles in the middle of a street Sunday night, and that he appeared to be intoxicated and was acting erratically. Police say he fled when the officer tried to get him out of the street.

Other officers responded and tried to arrest Wise near an apartment complex. Police say the officers used stun guns after Wise swung and kicked at them. One officer was injured.

More officers arrived, and Wise was arrested but then became unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital after CPR was administered, where he died hours later.

Wise's body has been transported to the medical examiner in Manassas for an autopsy.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said Culpeper Police Chief Chris Jenkins asked the agency to investigate the incident. The Culpeper department also is investigating, as required by department policy.

Jenkins offered condolences to Wise's family.

"Any loss of life of a loved one, no matter the circumstances, is always tragic and very much too soon," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wise family as they mourn their loss."

Wise's sister, Sabrina Wise, called the 2002 Culpeper County High School graduate a "respectful guy who loved his daughter and was very funny." "It's unbelievable that he's gone and not here anymore," she said. "His presence is definitely here."
