Man Charged in Deadly Hit-and-Run Outside D.C. Hospital

Police have arrested a man in connection with a deadly hit-and-run outside a D.C. hospital last month.

Rahveed Comford was taken into custody Monday. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of 56-year-old Emebet Kebede, who was fatally struck outside United Medical Center in Southeast D.C.

Kebede, a longtime physician's assistant, was leaving work Aug. 21 when she was hit by an SUV at about 6:10 p.m.

The driver fled the scene. Three days later, police released a picture of a person of interest.

Kebede's death, as well as another fatality earlier this year, raised concerns about pedestrian safety in front of the hospital. In April, 68-year-old Faith Pine was struck and killed in the same area.

Although there is a bus stop right across the street from the hospital's entrance, the closest traffic light and crosswalk was nearly two blocks down the street. In response, the city has installed flashing pedestrian crossing signs. A pedestrian-activated traffic light should be in place by December.
