Man Accused in Slaying of Virginia Student Due in Court

A man accused in the slaying of University of Mary Washington student has a scheduled court appearance in Fredericksburg.

The city prosecutor's office says Steven V. Briel is to appear in Circuit Court on Thursday for arraignment on charges related to the April 17 abduction and slaying of 20-year-old Grace Mann.

Briel has been charged with first-degree murder, strangulation and abduction.

Briel was a part-time Mary Washington student who shared a house with Mann and two other women. The 20-year-old McLean woman was active on campus, particularly with a feminist group that is seeking a federal gender discrimination investigation of the state university.

Briel is being held without bond.
