MLK Memorial Library Receives Funding for Sunday Hours

Just a couple of days before the end of Sunday hours at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, money was found to keep it open.

Thanks to one of the library's biggest supporters, Mayor Vincent Gray, the library will get the $316,000 it needs for Sunday hours.

Cuts in the fiscal year 2012 budget lead to the decision to keep the library closed Sundays. The budget goes into effect Saturday.

"The library plays an important role in supporting education for students of all ages and providing job search and career assistance," Gray said. "We are pleased we were able to identify funding to keep the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library open on Sundays."

Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper and Council member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) will join Gray Sunday at 1 p.m. to welcome District residents into the library.

"It is a priority to keep libraries open as many hours as possible, and we are pleased we are able to continue to offer this important service to District residents," Cooper said.

The library at Ninth and G streets in Northwest is open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
