Vigil to Be Held at MLK Jr. Memorial

Vigil to Mark the Anniversary of MLK Jr.'s Death

A candlelight vigil is planned at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Wednesday night to mark the anniversary of the civil rights leader's assassination 44 years ago.

Organizers are inviting the public to join the ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Speakers will include Harry Johnson, president of the foundation that built the memorial; Arun Manilal Gandhi, a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and others.

The King Memorial was completed last year after decades of work to build it among Washington's monuments to presidents. Its grand opening was postponed to October 2011 after the planned ceremony in August was thwarted by Hurricane Irene.
