MGM National Harbor Casino Announces Opening Date

The casino and resort will open Dec. 8

In just two months, the MGM National Harbor Casino in Maryland will open its doors.

The Las Vegas-style casino and resort will open to guests on Dec. 8, 2016, MGM announced Monday.

"After years of planning, designing and developing, we are thrilled that the moment is almost upon us to share this very special resort with the community and visitors from around the world,” said Lorenzo Creighton, president of MGM National Harbor.

The MGM National Harbor Casino has more the 125,000 square feet of casino space and dining options curated by celebrity chefs.

Once all that eating and gambling wears you out, you can book a stay in one of the resort's luxury rooms. Guests looking to stay anytime after Dec. 10 can book a room online or by phone. Room rates start at $399 while suite rates start at $599.

The Theater at MGM National Harbor will also host concerts, comedy shows, UFC fights and boxing matches.

But there are some concerns about how the region will handle the increase in traffic. Once the casino opens, the area likely will go from handling 90,000 cars per week to 180,000 cars per week, MGM senior vice president Kent Digby said.

There are 16 projects underway to smooth traffic, Digby said last month.

"We probably will make further improvements after the opening of MGM. In fact, I know we will," Digby said.
