The person hit and killed by an train in Boyds, Maryland Monday afternoon was a teenage boy, police said in an update Monday night.
John Martin DeReggi Jr., 16, died after he stepped onto train tracks near the Boyds MARC train station, Montgomery County Police said. First-responders arrived on the scene about 4:45 p.m.
The Boyds resident was walking along the tracks with two other teens when, "for reasons still under investigation," DeReggi walked onto the tracks and into the path of an Amtrak train, police said initial information reveals.
MARC suspended westbound trains on the Brunswick line for hours after the incident and advised riders to use Metro's Red Line, if possible. The train that hit the teen left D.C. at 4:05 p.m., Amtrak said in a statement.
Since Jan. 1, 2014, 70 people have been injured or killed on or near train tracks in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. The incident Monday is the 71st such event, according to News4's I-Team.
