Loudoun Woman Charged in 2005 Death of Daughter

Toddler died of blunt force trauma

A Loudoun County woman has been charged with murder in the death of her young daughter almost seven years later.

The 20-month-old toddler, Jocelin Gutierrez, died in August 2005, but charges were never filed.

On Tuesday, the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office announced murder charges against the girl's mother, 30-year-old Vanesa Patricio-Cruz, of Sterling. The sheriff's office said a recent follow-up investigation revealed that the girl died of blunt force trauma.

Patricio-Cruz is being held at the county jail without bond.

The charges come a day after police in neighboring Prince William County filed murder charges against a 22-year-old mother for the 2010 death of her infant son.
