Loudoun County Closes Schools for the Week

Snow closes schools until after Presidents Day

The weekend snow means an unexpected and extended Winter break for Loudoun County students. The school system has announced that schools will be closed for the rest of the week. That includes all activities, practices and other uses of school buildings.

“Decisions about opening schools are always made with student safety first and foremost, both for walkers and bus riders,” said a statement from the superintendent’s office. The school system said it will probably take until Sunday to dig out the 770 buses and make them "trip worthy.”

Loudoun has an estimated 20,000 students who walk to and from school every day. School officials say they’re working as fast as they can to open campus parking lots and clear walkways.

To further complicate matters, Loudoun’s neighborhood and secondary roads need to be clear enough for buses to have more than single-lane passage…plus there needs to be room to turn at intersections, and there's another snow storm coming!

School officials are asking Loudoun citizens to help by clearing sidewalks and bus stops so that students have some space for walking and waiting once the buses start to roll again.

Right now, the plan is to prepare to re-open schools on Tuesday, Feb. 16, after Presidents Day.

Bring on Spring!
