Lots of Snow Brings Lower Gas Prices

Gas prices fall for the fifth week in a row

There may have been some good to come out of all this snow: gas prices fell for the fifth week in a row.

According to AAA Mid-Atlantic, the current average for a gallon of regular gasoline in the District is $2.79.  That’s down six cents since last month.

So what’s the reason for this drop in price? It seems the snow kept more people inside, and off the roads.  Nationwide, gas purchases declined 3.7 percent for the week ending February 5.  Snowfall was the biggest factor.

These low prices might not stick around for long, though.

“Gasoline prices will begin to slowly rise across much of the country as colder than average weather results in rising oil demand as temperatures plummet in key areas that warm their homes using heating oil,” according to Patrick DeHaan, Senior Petroleum Analyst at GasBuddy.com.

As overall demand goes up, you could see the prices go up as well.
