A pair of 5-year-old twin brothers will go to school on Monday sporting a new hair do - or lack thereof.
Carter and Blake Furey shaved their head Sunday afternoon to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Carter battled retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, at nine months old and lost his vision in his left eye.
Now, Carter is in remission and sat beside his brother for the second year in a row as they went bald.
Other local participants joined the twins at Fado Irish Pub in D.C., with a goal of raising $40,000 to support the foundation’s mission to take childhood back from cancer.
Julia Alexander, the 2018 St. Baldrick’s Ambassador helped cheer on the shavees as well. Alexander was diagnosed with a grade II ependymoma in her brain four years ago.
After eight surgeries, eight rounds of chemotherapy and two months of radiation, Alexander never lost her smile or compassion for others.
One in five children diagnosed with cancer will not survive. Those who do survive often suffer long-term effects from treatment too harsh for their developing bodies.
