MARYLAND CASINO OPENS
When Mike Lee heard that the Hollywood Casino Perryville was opening this morning, a few days ahead of schedule, he scratched his plans for golf and headed for the slot machines. When the casino opened its doors to the public at 8 a.m. -- the beginning of a new chapter in Maryland gambling -- Lee was the first of about 35 people in line. "I could have played golf in the rain. This seemed a little more entertaining," said the 59-year-old retiree from Havre de Grace. (Baltimore Sun)

CRACKDOWN ON "SUSPICIOUS" PEOPLE
Although mounting concerns about citizen robberies have police beefing up patrols off the campus, police said the usual suspects on university property haven't gone anywhere.  So far in September, University Police have logged more than a dozen cases in which officers responded to disorderly conduct, denied someone access to the campus or observed a "suspicious person," according to the department's online records, often involving non-students. SPEED CAMERA REVENUE DOWN
As Chevy Chase Village begins to see success with its speed cameras along Connecticut Avenue and drivers learn to slow down, the revenue generated by the program that is available for salaries and public safety projects is also slowing down. The Safe Speed program ticketed nearly 50,000 fewer people in 2009 than in 2008 and brought in about $2.56 million less for the village in fiscal 2010 than the previous year. (Gazette)
