Lightning Possibly Started Fire on Middle School Campus in Charles County

Lightning may have started a fire on the campus of John Hansen Middle School in Charles County, Maryland, Wednesday evening, causing extensive damage.

The building housing modular classrooms between the middle school building and the elementary school building caught fire.

About 50 percent of the building was destroyed, affecting about 15 classrooms, according to the fire department.

When the fire broke out, the classrooms were being used for adult education, and about 80 adults were in classes when the lightning reportedly struck, according to the school district. Everyone got out safely, and no injuries were reported.

Adult education classes are canceled until further notice.

During the school year, the classrooms are sometimes used for overflow classes.
