Lawyer Charged with Embezzling $650K from Virginia State Senator

A lawyer from Fairfax, Virginia, has been indicted on charges of embezzling over $650,000 from the campaign fund of Virginia State Sen. Richard Saslaw.

According to the indictment that was unsealed in Monday's court appearance, David Miller, 68, participated in three fraud schemes between 2011 and 2014.

In the first scheme, Miller and his wife allegedly created two fake law firms to fraudulently bill Miller's employer, SkyLink Air and Logistic Support, the district attorney's office said.

The second scheme alleged that Miller embezzled over $650,000 from Saslaw's campaign account. Miller's wife, Linda Wallis, was Saslaw's treasurer in his state senator campaign.

During her stint as treasurer from June 2013 to Sept. 2014, Wallis issued over 70 fraudulent checks from Saslaw's campaign bank account. The district attorney's office said Saslaw had no knowledge of the checks being issued.

The third scheme in the indictment alleged Miller misused funds from an organization he and Wallis co-founded, the Community College Consortium on Autism and Intellectual Disabilities (CCAID). The consortium raised around $780,000 to create programs to help individuals affected by autism and other disabilities, but the indictment documents alleged Wallis transferred $482,000 to other bank accounts that she and Miller used for personal purposes, such as vacations to Jamaica and mortgage payments.

The thefts totaled $1.4 million, prosecutors said.

Wallis pleaded guilty and received a 56-month prison sentence.

Miller was charged with several crimes, including identity theft, money laundering and wire fraud.
