ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Several Maryland legislators want to require law enforcement agencies to issue monthly reports on SWAT team deployments after police raided the home and killed the dogs of an innocent Berwyn Heights mayor last summer.
A package containing 32 pounds of marijuana was sent to Mayor Cheye Calvo's home in late July by smugglers who hoped to have a courier pick it up quickly afterward, authorities said. Officers kicked down the door and shot Calvo's dogs during the raid. Police later cleared Calvo and his wife of any wrongdoing and charged two unrelated people as suspects.
Prince George's County Senator Anthony Muse, Delegates Kris Valderrama and Victor Ramirez, and Montgomery County Senator Brian Frosh want to require SWAT teams in Maryland to make monthly reports on the number, purpose, authorization, general location and results of their deployments.
