A 21-year-old who was rescued from a pond last night has died, officials said.
Rescuers searched for Kalif Omar Richardson in the shallow pond at the Mistletoe Apartments on Old Stagecoach Road in Laurel, Md. about 8:30 p.m.
Swimmers and divers combed the pond, which is only about chest deep, for more than an hour before finding the man in about 5 feet of water.
He was then rushed to an area hospital, where he died shortly after midnight.
There are reports that Richardson was simply going for a swim on a hot night, but police are still investigating why he entered the water.
An autopsy was being performed Wednesday morning. It will take about six weeks to get toxicology results.
