Teen Killed, Two Others Wounded, in Anacostia Shooting

Three teens were shot, one fatally, Sunday night in Anacostia.

Metropolitan Police and D.C. Fire & EMS found the victims after they were called to the 1300 block of Morris Road SE just before 10 p.m. for reports of gunshots.

Jamel Kirkland, 17, died at the scene. Two other teenage boys were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Kirkland played for the Woodland Tigers, a community football team.

"It's sad. It's heartbreaking. I just left his mother and I couldn't stay there no longer and just, you know, to see the hurt on her face," Woodland Tigers Football Coach Steve Zanders said.

D.C. Council member Trayon White said 31 juveniles have been shot and wounded in less than a year east of the Anacostia river.

"It's happening far too often in our community. We have to figure out where these guns are coming from. We have to start holding elected officials accountable, parents accountable, community members accountable, everybody because these are our nephews, our sons, our neices, our daughters. So it's a community effort," White told News4.
