Jogger Assault Suspect May Live in the Neighborhood

Residents near Sligo Creek Trail on alert

A sexual assault on a female jogger Thursday evening put neighbors on edge in a normally quiet part of Takoma Park, Md. The suspected attacker is still on the loose, and may even live in the area, police said.

It was 5 p.m. Thursday, when a man grabbed the woman off the Sligo Creek Trail in Takoma Park, Md., police said. He allegedly dragged the jogger into a wooded area and attacked her there.

"It's devastating," said resident Marlene Stewart. "We consider [the trail] part of our community. It's relatively safe. There have been a few minor incidents, but this is major."

After the assault was reported, police combed the area around Maple Avenue and the Carroll Avenue Bridge. A dog picked up the suspected attacker's trail, which authorities followed into a residential area, but to no avail.

Police have increased their patrols around the Sligo Creek Trail. Anyone who may have any information on the assault should call Takoma Park's Police Dept. at (301) 270-1100.
