Jet Engine Removed From Va. Beach Crash Site

Navy F/A-18D crashed Friday

The Navy has removed an engine and other pieces of a jet that crashed at a Virginia Beach apartment complex.

The Virginian-Pilot reported http://bit.ly/IGIW9H that workers in protective gear used a crane Wednesday to remove the F/A-18D debris. The jet crashed Friday shortly after taking off from nearby Naval Air Station Oceana.

City officials said a plan is being worked out for allowing residents of the Mayfair Mews apartment complex to return to their homes, although it was unclear when that might occur.

The Navy expects to finish with debris removal by the end of the week.
