Is Old Town Alexandria “Charm-ville?”

City plans to expand advertising efforts under new name

Members of the Alexandria City Council are considering a proposal to expand an advertising campaign to attract tourists, but that effort has mixed reviews.

Charming. That's what visitors to Old Town consistently describe the city to the Alexandria Visitors and Convention Association. That's why city leaders are considering an expansion of a spring advertising campaign in high-end magazines. The headline on that ad is "Charm-ville," a marketing slogan Old Town resident Christine Bernstein says is silly.

"The first time I heard that, I thought it was something from a comic book or perhaps a reality TV show," says Bernstein.

Association President Stephanie Brown says the campaign has been calculated to hit the right demographic.

"Charm-ville is a headline that helps underscore how charming Alexandria is."

Council members will decide on the $100,000 appropriation.
