Injured Firefighter Released From the Hospital

Kevin Weems received severe burns fighting a Christmas Eve blaze

A Hyattsville firefighter severely burned while fighting a Christmas Eve house fire was released from the hospital Friday.

The fire in a home on Flintridge Drive in Landover Hills Wednesday left Kevin Weems with first and second-degree burns to his hands, shoulders, ears, and thigh.

The fire also displaced two families.  It caused $80,000 in damage.

Weems was one of the first firefighters to go inside the house.

"There was a basement fire, I knew it was going to be hot," Weems told News4 as he left the hospital. "My crew stayed with me, we made a good attack . . . went in there, we ultimately put the fire out. Unfortunately, in this job, some things just happen."

Doctors say Weems will need recovery time and physical therapy before he will be able to return to full duty.
