Info for 2,400 Aid-Seeking Students Compromised

WASHINGTON -- The agency that handles college financial aid requests accidentally e-mailed 2,400 students' personal information to more than 1,000 of those students, the Washington Post reports.

An online application lets D.C. students apply for a series of grants, and about 1,250 applicants for one of those, DCTAG, received the info when an employee of the Office of the State Superintendent of Education's Higher Education Financial Services Program accidentally attached an Excel spreadsheet with the info to an e-mail, the Post reported. This happened last week and wasn't publicly announced, but an apology was e-mailed to parents and students.

Students who received the spreadsheet were asked to destroy it, and those whose information was shared have been offered a year of credit monitoring.
