UMD Earns Record With Human-Powered Chopper

Fifty engineering students at the University of Maryland captured a new world record for getting a female-piloted, human-powered helicopter off the ground.

The helicopter, Gamera, weighs just 210 pounds, including the pilot, Judy. She used her hands and feet to power the machine.

Thursday afternoon, the team was able to get their chopper off the ground for four seconds.

Howeber, they will not win the prestigious Sikorsky Prize, which was established in 1980. To win that, they would have had to be in the air for one minute.
