How to Help: DC-Area Organizations Gather Donations for Victims of Florence

Shelters and organizations throughout the D.C area are taking donations and asking for you to adopt displaced pets

D.C.-area organizations are calling for clothes, blood donations and more after Florence devastated the Carolinas with flooding and damage.

See below for a list of organizations and how to help.

The Humane Rescue Alliance says it is preparing its Northeast D.C. shelter to take in pets displaced during Florence and urged people to adopt the dogs and cats it currently has.

"Dogs and cats adopted...will make room for animals in dire need," HRA said on Facebook. The shelter also asked for donations to help save animals from affected areas.

Another D.C. shelter, Lucky Dog, rescued animals from the Carolina coast and 40 dogs and four cats were adopted at its PetSmart event in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on Sunday. Check here for more information on how to adopt with Lucky Dog.

The nonprofit BRAWS: Bringing Resources to Aid Women's Shelters is seeking donations for women affected by Florence. The items included new bras, underwear and unopened boxes of women's hygiene products. Collection centers are located in Alexandria, Clifton, Centreville and Vienna, Virginia

Soles4Souls, an organization that provides relief around the world, is asking its D.C. and Virginia branch to donate clothing and shoes. Donation centers are located in Northern Virginia.

The Red Cross said they are accepting monetary donations to provide shelter to evacuees escaping the storm across six states. In addition to the Red Cross' relief of supplies and shelter, the organization urged those in unaffected areas to donate blood to counter the loss of 4,200 uncollected donations from the 140 blood drives cancelled because of the storm, according to their site

Donations can be made at any Red Cross location in D.C., Maryland or Virginia.
