Catholic University Student Killed in Petworth

A Catholic University student was shot and killed at Sherman Circle NW early Sunday morning.

Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a call from residents who heard gunshots at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Neil Michael Godleski, 31, was found on the south side of the circle, near 32 Sherman Circle NW. He was suffering from gunshot wounds.

Godleski was biking home from Phillips restaurant on the waterfront where he waited tables. He was riding on Kansas Avenue when someone opened fire at Buchanan Street. He kept riding further up Kansas as shots continued to fire. He fell to the ground at Sherman Circle.

D.C. Fire & Emergency Medical Services transported Godleski to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Godleski lived on the 500 block of Ingraham Street NW, just north of Sherman Circle. He was a senior studying biology at Catholic.

Police do not have a motive for the death. It was the 75th homicide in the city in 2010.
