Homeless Population Rises in DC Area

More people are living on the streets in Washington area. A new report found the homeless population grew 2 percent, with the greatest increase in Prince William County, Va.

A survey by the Metropolitan Washington Council found there are 11,988 homeless people in the area, up from 11,774 last year. Almost a third of the homeless were children.

Michael Ferrell, executive director of the D.C. Coalition for the Homeless, said the region's economy is partly to blame for the increase.

The annual survey was taken this year in late January.
