Home Day Care Owner Convicted in Infant Girl's 2016 Death

A Maryland man has been convicted in the death of a 6-month-old girl who attended his home day care.

The Washington Post reports that 37-year-old Kia Divband faces up to 65 years in prison for first-degree child abuse resulting in death and other counts in connection with Millie Lilliston's 2016 death. The jury acquitted him of second-degree felony murder last week.

Authorities asserted that Divband first injured Millie that April, but didn't notify her parents, and inflicted fatal injuries later that month. Prosecutors pointed to internet searches for "broken bones in children" and similar queries.

His attorneys argued that no one witnessed Divband inflicting injuries, and that there was no evidence he intended to cause harm.

His first trial ended in mistrial after jurors couldn't reach unanimous verdicts.
