Hit-and-Run Kills Tow Truck Driver in Prince George's Co.

A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a tow truck driver in Maryland Wednesday, police said.

David Reinerio Pineda Alvarez, 63, arrived to tow a disabled vehicle on the shoulder of the road near southbound Branch Avenue and Coventry Way in Temple Hills, Maryland State Police said.

Alvarez was walking back to his truck when he was struck, police said. Police were called about 10:30 p.m.

“We are saddened to learn of the tragic loss of a tow truck driver contracted by AAA, who was assisting a member late last night,” AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman John B. Townsend II said. “Our hearts go out to his family.”

The striking driver did not stay at the scene, police said. Police haven't released details about the striking vehicle.

Police believe that the suspect vehicle may have been a 1999-2007 white or beige Cadillac Escalade with passenger side damage.

In Maryland, a "move over" law requires that drivers change lanes when they see the yellow lights of a flashing work truck.
