Metro Station Managers Subdue Suspect Armed With Gun

A man robbed someone at gunpoint in a D.C. Metro station and was taken down by two Metro employees.

Surveillance video captured the heroic actions of two Metro station managers who subdued an armed suspect on a train Saturday afternoon.

Rondez Trayvon Tibbs, 20, of Southeast Washington, flashed a loaded gun in his waistband and demanded someone's money at the Anacostia station after 4 p.m., police said. The victim handed over about $40.

Tibbs is seen in surveillance video in the lower right corner, Metro said. He then goes off camera but can be seen again sitting down on the train after he boarded while the door is still open.

On that northbound Green Line train, he got into an altercation with other passengers, according to a Metro news release. Two Metro station managers riding the train intervened.

After a struggle, the male station manager pinned Tibbs to the floor while the female station manager radioed the control center to send police, according to the release. During the altercation, the male employee took a handgun away from Tibbs and moved it out of his reach.

Video from the Navy Yard station shows the station manager restraining Tibbs, according to Metro.

Metro Transit Police intercepted the train at Gallery Place, arrested Tibbs and recovered a 25-caliber semi-automatic handgun, which was fully loaded with one bullet in the chamber, according to Metro.

Video from that station shows a Metro Transit Police officer running to the railcar.

"I'm feeling pretty good right now," station manager Pamela Rhone said. "I just did what I thought I would have wanted someone to do for me, if I was in that situation."

Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik praised the workers.

"Their efforts speak volumes about who they are, about the Metro organization," he said.

Green and Yellow line trains single-tracked around the police investigation for about 30 minutes.

Tibbs is charged with armed robbery and carrying a pistol without a license. Additional charges are possible.
