RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia will have millions more in federal dollars this winter to assist low-income residents with their heating bills.
The state will have $128 million to dispense under the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. That's more than three times the $38 million Virginia got last year.
A family of four with monthly gross income of $2,297 or less or an individual earning $1,127 or less a month would qualify.
Applications have to be made to local social services agencies by Dec. 1.
Last year, the program aided 108,000 Virginia households.
Congress this year boosted heating assistance to $5 billion nationally, at least four times more than a year ago, after a severe winter and soaring fuel prices a year ago.
