Helicopter Called In for National Park Rescue

U.S. Park Police from Washington, D.C., used a helicopter on Friday to save an injured hiker at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.

The hiker fell about 20 feet and broke his leg at the summit of Old Rag Mountain. Park rangers hiked to the summit of the mountain, about 4,000 feet up, to reach the injured man.

Realizing it would take hours to carry him down the mountain, the National Park Service called in a helicopter. Air crews lowered a rescue basket to him and hoisted him to safety.

The helicopter flew him to the foot of the mountain, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to the hospital.
