‘He Really Was So Kind': Friends Remember 16-Year-Old Killed in Reston Hit-and-Run

A teen boy killed in a hit-and-run crash in Northern Virginia is being remembered in the final days of 2018, and the search for the driver who hit him is underway.

Marvin Daniel Cruz Serrano died after he was hit by a car while crossing the street in Reston on Saturday evening. He was 16 and attended South Lakes High School.

"He really was so kind and selfless," friend Lindsay Byrd said. She was one of several friends who met in the rain at a roadside memorial for Serrano on New Year's Eve.

Serrano, known as Daniel, was hit after he left work at the restaurant Cafesano and then took the bus home, a coworker said.

Fairfax County police responded to South Lakes Drive and Castle Rock Square at about 5:40 p.m. Serrano was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials are investigating whether he had been using a crosswalk at the intersection.

The driver fled the scene in a sedan, according to witnesses. The car is believed to have heavy damage to the front end.

Friend Autumn Wright spoke bitterly about the driver.

"Why would you do that, like you didn’t have any thought in your head to stop? You didn’t care," she said.

Anyone with information for police is asked to call 703-280-0543. A reward of as much as $1,000 is available.
