A Hampton University student from Alexandria, Virginia, was killed after a shooting near Old Dominion University early Saturday morning.
Police said Joseph Bose, 20, was dead at the scene at the intersection of West 35th Street and Killiam Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia around 3:15 a.m.
In a statement, Hampton University said Bose was a junior majoring in journalism. Norfolk police said the shooting started after an argument.
Norfolk Police Chief Michael Goldsmith said he was calling on community members to take a stand against violence. Bose’s shooting was the second that morning.
“When did it become ok to solve a fight with a gun?” Goldsmith said. “As a parent, I cannot fathom this inherent disregard for human life. As a police chief, I refuse to allow this mentality to become commonplace in our city.”
Police continue to investigate the shooting but have not released any information on the identity of the assailant.
