Police offer up stolen loot to rightful owners

A liquor store bust in January led police to a great amount of stolen merchandise that was valued at more than $200,000.

Now police are trying to get the property back to the rightful owners.  Items have been posted online for people to view, and the items will available for public viewing in person Jan. 5-7 at the D.C. Armory, located at 2001 East Capital Street SE.

The items were found in January after police raided what they called a large-scale fencing operation at Rosemar Liquors in the 1300 block of Good Hope Road in Southeast.

Wednesday is the last day to view the items online.  If people see items they believe belong to them, they can head to the Armory to claim it from Jan. 5-7 or they can e-mail police at mpd.stolenproperty@dc.gov.  E-mails should include the following information:

  • Your Name
  • Address
  • Contact telephone numbers
  • Police report numbers for the stolen property

A Police Report Number (sometimes referred to a Citizen Complaint Number or CCN) or proof that the stolen property had been reported stolen is required to recover your property.

Once they receive the e-mail, MPD detectives will then contact the owners to schedule a time to meet and physically inspect the property. Owners must submit proof that they reported the stolen property to the police. The claimant must also submit proof to identify the property as being theirs.

The hours for the public viewing at the Armory:

January 5 and 6, 2009
12 pm - 7 pm

January 7, 2009
10 am - 5 pm

To claim property, an individual must have:

A Government-issued Identification Card, a Police Report Number (also referred to a Citizen Complaint Number, or CCN) and one of the following:

  • Serial number of stolen property
  • Insurance appraisals for stolen property
  • Photographs of stolen property with copy of receipt
  • Any other proof of ownership will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the MPD investigators at the event.

Any property not claimed during this operation will be released to the Federal Government to be sold at auction.
