RICHMOND, Va. -- Efforts to ban the private sale of firearms at gun shows without background checks on purchasers has died in Virginia … again.
The state Senate rejected the bill 22-18 Tuesday.
The legislation is introduced and killed perennially, usually before it reaches a vote by the full Senate. However, the bill advanced to the Senate floor the past two years after a Democratic takeover in the 2007 elections and an advocacy for the reform from families of victims of the April 2007 massacre by a gunman at Virginia Tech.
The legislation would have compelled private sellers at the shows to perform the same federal checks licensed gun dealers must make.
