Groups Counter Ads Questioning Belief in God

WASHINGTON -- Two groups have purchased advertisements to counter an ad campaign that asks "Why believe in a god?" Metro officials said.

The ads by the American Humanist Association began appearing on buses last month. They proclaim "Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake."

Besides prompting hundreds of complaints, the ads have led two religious groups to launch their own campaigns, which will begin appearing next week.
One ad by Pennsylvania Friends of Christ reads "Believe in God. Christ is Christmas for goodness sake." It will be displayed on 10 Metrobuses for four weeks.
Another ad by the Center for Family Development asks "Why Believe? Because I created you and I love you, for goodness' sake." That ad will appear for four weeks inside 200 buses.
