Gray's Ex-Campaign Chair Worried About Adviser's Actions

Documents show that the chairwoman of former District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray's campaign expressed concerned that his political adviser was running an off-the-books campaign.

The Washington Post reports that Lorraine Green said in email to Gray's then-girlfriend that his political adviser, Vernon Hawkins, was "doing something off the books." Green said she wasn't "in the loop" and didn't "want to be."

The email sent prior to the 2010 primary election was described in court documents unsealed at the newspaper's request.

Hawkins was recently six months in prison this month for his role in what prosecutors have called a "shadow campaign" that helped Gray get elected.

Prosecutors ended their investigation without charging Gray, who has denied all wrongdoing. He's now seeking a seat on the D.C. Council.
