Gone Phishing

Arrests, drug seizures pile up at Phish reunion

HAMPTON, Va. -- Phishheads left a weekend reunion of the jam band in Hampton a bit lighter than they arrived.

Police in the coastal Virginia city said Monday they confiscated about $1.2 million in illegal drugs and more than $68,000 in cash from concertgoers, the Associated Press reported.

Maybe the economic stimulus plan should make pot legal and require Phish to stay on tour until the recession's over.

Like shooting phish in a barrel, officers also arrested 194 fans during the three-night celebration of the band's return to the stage after a nearly five-year absence, police said. Most of the arrests were for drug possession, use and distribution, which almost sounds like entrapment.

Furthermore, the tab for the almost 200 law enforcement officers who worked the weekend event was picked up by the Vermont-based band, the AP reported.

Last week, the band got a judge to block the sale of bootlegs at the three shows, despite the fact that the group's popularity largely is due to its live performances, word of which spread through the jam-band community with much help from bootleg recordings of concerts. The judge stopped short of allowing the band's workers to confiscate any bootleg T-shirts, recordings or other merchandise.

What's next? Banning Hacky Sacks and Birkenstocks? Oh, how times have changed since 2004.
