Body of Student Missing in South Africa Found, George Washington University Says

George Washington University said Friday that the body of a student who went missing while swimming in South Africa has been found.

The body of Nicholas Upton, 19, of Redding, Connecticut, was found Friday, Vice Provost and Dean of Student Affairs Peter Konwerski said in an email.

"Our hearts go out to Nick’s family and friends. He touched many during his time at GW, and he will be missed," a statement from Konwerski said.

The college junior had not been sen since he went swimming in the East Cape Province Sunday about 10:30 p.m. local time, according to a previous statement from the university.

Upton had been studying at the University of Cape Town. He was part of a group of 11 people who went swimming. He disappeared after appearing to get into trouble in the surf line, according to a release from South Africa's National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

Adverse weather conditions hampered search attempts.

Upton had been studying abroad in South Africa and was traveling during a break from classes. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity and the GW men's rowing team, according to Kappa Alpha's Facebook page, the GW Hatchet reported.
